Thoughts about faith, life and our world.

The Silver Lining…

…to the Liberal victory in Ontario, is that MMP was soundly rejected by the people, especially the north. The highest polling against the referendum was found in the northern ridings:

  • Nippising 72.9% against MMP
  • Renfrew Nippising Pembrooke 74.5% against MMP
  • Sault Ste. Marie 73.8% against MMP
  • Timiskaming Cochrane 76.5% against MMP
  • Timmins James Bay 77.3% against MMP
  • Kenora Rainy River 70% against MMP

Only in the two Thunder Bay ridings did the numbers drop below 70%, and then not by much. The only other riding which polled above 70% against MMP was Stormont Dundas, which covers Cornwall and the surrounding area (73.2% against MMP). Take a look at which ridings voted in favour of MMP (anything above 50%):

  • Beaches East York
  • Davenport
  • Parkdale High Park
  • Trinity Spadina
  • Toronto Danforth

Not one of these hotbeds of champagne socialists managed to break 60%. Notice that each of these ridings is a downtown Toronto riding. Every riding outside of the downtown of Toronto rejected MMP, and the results were strongly against MMP in the rural ridings.
